Using the correct ammunition may seem like a no brainer. But recently while I was at the range (not teaching for a change) I notice a guy having trouble with his firearm. So I asked if he needed any help and he replied “I bought a bad batch of ammunition”. Seeing that the box was that of a major brand I asked him what the problem was. He said that the ammunition was not made right and he has to forcefully jam it into the gun. A lot of red flags went up for me at this point so I asked if I could take a look at the gun he was using. The gun was a Walther PPKS. This is a gun in caliber 380. On the side of the gun says 9mm Kurz. The box of ammunition was 9mm. Without out understanding what the correct ammunition his gun took he purchased the wrong caliber, I explained the difference to him and after a thank you and a laugh he left the range to go buy the correct ammunition.
This is a common mistake with this model firearm. Please remember if you are using force to load your firearms something is not correct.
